Responsible Sourcing

Kangamiut Seafood holds Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification and actively pursues collaboration with suppliers of MSC and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified products or other Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) sustainability certified products.

We are proud to have worked in close partnership with several fishers and aquaculture producers to assist them with achieving MSC or ASC certification for their fishery or farm. One such example is our multistakeholder collaboration with small scale shrimp farms in Vietnam which resulted in the ASC certification of 27 farms, improving the environmental and social outcomes for these farmers that would otherwise have been out of reach without these efforts. It is our natural choice to support fully traceable, responsibly managed fisheries and aquaculture production both to ensure resources for future generations and because our business itself depends on responsible fishing and production practices. This approach is framed within our Responsible Sourcing Policy.

Carbon Emissions

Carbon Emissions

At Kangamiut Seafood, we are working to understand and reduce our carbon footprint. As a seafood trading company, our direct GHG emissions — from for example offices and company cars— are relatively small. Most emissions associated with the products that we trade occur upstream in the supply chain in fishing, farming, and processing. This is demonstrated in the carbon life cycle analyses conducted by 2.0 LCA (link below) for two of our main products, cod and shrimp.

We actively monitor and measure our Scope 1 & 2 emissions and are committed to strengthening our GHG data to include Scope 3 estimates in the future so that we can provide customers with transparent, product-specific carbon emissions information.

Our Scope 1 & 2 carbon emission reduction actions to date include:

  • Transitioning to fully electric company vehicle fleet by end 2025
  • Energy optimisation at company-owned facilities
  • Installation of solar panels for electricity to run our buildings and net zero charging of our vehicles

To supplement our carbon emission reduction efforts, we are simultaneously working on carbon capture through our Kangamiut Green Land forest generation and preservation projects. The key phases in this initiative have so far been:

  • 2021: Acquisition and protection of the 38 hectares forest “Dronninggård Skov”, 2 km from our headquarters
  • 2023: Acquisition of 76 ha local farmland for afforestation and nature reestablishment with completion of the afforestation phase (> 60 hectares of trees planted) including the establishment of 3 lakes in 2024

We realise that these steps won’t eliminate the total carbon footprint of our products, but we believe that action, improving data, and supporting transparency are essential to driving progress.

Supplier Collaboration for Positive Environmental Impact

Our Supplier Code of Conduct describes the environmental as well as our social and governance standards that we ask Kangamiut Seafood suppliers to uphold. It includes expectations on responsibly sourced seafood, resource use and efficiency, emissions (including carbon emissions), biodiversity and packaging. Our internal Approved Supplier program helps us to risk assess suppliers in line with our Supplier Code of Conduct. We work hand in hand with our suppliers to help foster improvements in their sustainability practices.
