About us

Kangamiut Seafood: the original cornerstone of the Kangamiut Group

In 1975, Niels Vinther Rasmussen founded “Kangamiut Fish Trade” with Jørgen Urne who at the time was based in the little settlement Kangaamiut in Greenland. In 1985, Niels acquired Urne’s shares in the company, and Kangamiut developed into a major, renowned player on the global seafood scene.

Over time, Kangamiut Fish Trade was divided into our mother company, the Kangamiut Group A/S, and Kangamiut Seafood A/S as the center of our business operations.

Our spirit and our values are preserved and nurtured as the Kangamiut Group remains a family business, owned by our founder’s wife and three children, with Kangamiut Seafood as the original cornerstone of the Kangamiut Group.

The story of Kangamiut Seafood & the Kangamiut Group

In Kangamiut Seafood, we are experts in global partnerships within seafood thanks to our profound product knowledge, reliable delivery, and swift response. We have been providing the world with quality frozen fish and seafood for half a century.

It all started in 1975, when “Kangamiut Fish Trade” was founded by Niels Vinther Rasmussen as a partnership with Jørgen Urne who at the time was based in the little settlement Kangaamiut on the west coast of Greenland. From his home-built desk and equipped with a telephone and a calculator, Niels traded frozen seafood sourced from Greenland, and in 1985 he acquired Urne’s shares in the company.

From then on, Niels with his incredible drive and eye for business was an unstoppable engine in developing new business areas and partnerships, resulting in the establishment of Kangamiut as a major, renowned player on the global seafood scene.

Over the years, several successful subsidiary and associated companies were established around the world based on the Kangamiut partnership model in which the group companies are typically co-owned with local management. Each company operates independently while enjoying the synergies throughout the group – and embracing the values that we describe based on what we call the 'Kangamiut Triangle':

  • We build strong partnerships through COLLABORATION
  • We are SOLUTION-ORIENTED, always focused on problem solving
  • We act with integrity and continuously aim to DO WHAT IS RIGHT

These values are preserved and nurtured as Kangamiut remains a family business, primarily owned by the late founder’s wife and three children.

As a supplier and distributor of frozen fish and seafood the raw material of our business is, of course, the catch from the primary fisheries. However, our main strength as a reliable collaboration partner in the fish & seafood supply chain is the wonderful people around us: Our trusted suppliers; our dedicated employees and colleagues; and our valued customers around the world.

Today, Kangamiut Seafood remains the main subsidiary of the Kangamiut Group, and with the recent merger of former Kangamiut Group subsidiaries Northcoast Seafoods A/S and Dansea Nordic A/S with Kangamiut Seafood, we stand even stronger and more resilient for the next half century to come.

In Kangamiut, we think commercially but act humanly - a trustworthy combination you can truly rely on.

Together – let’s catch the future!
