Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood contribute to the removal of lost fishing gear in the Disco Bay area

The Boards of Directors of Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood have on June 12^th 2023 decided to contribute 75.000 DKK each to a project to clean the ocean bottom floor in the Disco Bay area near Ilulissat, Greenland.

The clean-up project is coordinated and operated by IAPP (The Fishermen's and Hunter’s Association in Ilulissat) and will remove lost fishing gear from the ocean floor.

While the two times 75.000 DKK is a rather modest amount in the bigger context, the hope is that other companies will follow and support the IAPP’s efforts to remove the lost fishing gear.

This project is at the heart of Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood’s continuous prioritisation of responsible fishing practices and focus on maintaining a healthy ocean and secure resources for future generations.

About lost fishing gear

According to WWF, abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear, commonly referred to as ‘ghost gear’, contributes significantly to the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean. These gillnets, traps, and other types of fishing gear are particularly harmful because they can continue to catch target and non-target species indiscriminately for years. About Halibut Greenland and North Atlantic Seafood

Halibut Greenland is located in Ilulissat, Greenland and produces locally caught Greenland halibut and Atlantic cod. The company is primarily owned by the local fishermen who deliver their daily catch from their own day boats and small vessels to Halibut Greenland for processing. Export of these pristine products to the global market is handled by North Atlantic Seafood.

Halibut Greenland is a minority shareholder in North Atlantic Seafood and vice versa; both companies are part of the Kangamiut Group.
